This comic shows an Asian child, Yung Ju, receiving an A- on his exam. He is very excited about this grade because he worked very hard to achieve it. Delighted with his grade, he runs home to show his mom expecting a big hug and a smile for all of his hard work and grade to show for it. Instead, he is met with a stern and disappointed face. “An A- won't get you into Harvard,” his mother states in a calm but stern voice. “Both your father and I graduated at the top of our class, both in high school and at Harvard,” his mother continued, “we did not get to the top by getting A-’s.” Yung Ju’s face had slowly turned from a large smile to a quivering frown. Almost in tears, he began to apologize for his grade. The same grade that he was beaming about merely five minutes ago. He promised his mom that he would work harder next time and try to bring home an A. “You will only bring home As. Nothing less,” his mother responded as she storms out of the room.
In this story, we see a Yung Ju, a chinese child, proud of his accomplishments, being put down because his accomplishments were not up to par with what his parents expected. Instead of responding with love and telling him that she was proud of him for trying to get a good grade, his mother becomes angry. She does not show affection by hugging him or telling him that she knows he will do better in the future. Instead she turns a cold shoulder and leaves, making Yung Ju feel bad about himself and his grade.
