My grandfather was always extremely independent and loved to do things for himself. Even when we told him that he needed a walking cane, he refused. I see that a lot of that rubbed off on my father and me as well. Throughout my childhood I was always very independent. I always wanted to work through things on my own and never felt as accomplished if I asked for help. This is great but when taken too far it can be detrimental. My grandfather could have lived many more years. He was very healthy but he refused to use a cane. By refusing to use a cane to help him walk, he ended up tripping which caused his death. I have tried to learn from this and now am willing to ask for help when I need it.
